First, let me say congratulations on surviving the first trimester. The second trimester is kind of like half-time. It’s generally thought to be the best time in pregnancy, and it was definitely the fest one for us. The morning sickness has left and the discomfort of the third trimester has yet to come. Enjoy this time, my friend. Your wife will actually be able to go places and do things. Now would be a good time to take a nice vacation. Remember, it’s your last chance to have a vacation with just the two of you for a long time. Towards the end, your wife probably won’t feel like going anywhere and after birth neither of you will have time even if you do want to go somewhere. Here are some fun ideas to spend time together and some more tips to be a helpful hubby.
1. Go for walks in the park ?Nikki and I live in New York City, so we were spoiled to have Central Park just a few blocks away. Still, any park is a great place for her to get out and enjoy some fresh air after being glued to the couch and toilet for three months.
2. Go picnicking ?This kind of ties in to number 1, but the key is to enjoy a meal together outside of the house.
3. Go out to movies and to eat more often ?You won’t have much of a chance afterwards, so take advantage now, especially if you guys are movie buffs. Also, take this time to try new restaurants and not worry about cooking so much.
4. Enjoy your sex life before it goes ?Trust me, at some point soon it will go away for a while?a long, long while.
5. Go with her to as many doctor visits as possible ?Just being with her is a great way to give support. I never realized before how much Nikki hated hospitals, and my being with her was a great help. This is especially important for the second trimester, because that’s when the visits start to become more frequent.
6. Get her some pregnancy mags ?When you go with her to these doctor visits, you’ll probably notice the large amount of pregnancy magazines in existence. These magazines are actually very interesting. I swear they’re not just girly articles. Buy some or even get a subscription, and then read them with her so you can both stay abreast of the tons of pregnancy info that’s out there.
Don’t forget to keep massaging her every night. This will really relax her. At this point, she probably won’t be able to lie down on her stomach, so the best way to give her a back massage is to have her sit in a chair facing the bed and to have her lay down her head. Another thing to watch for is lactose intolerance. This hit Nikki pretty hard, which was sad because she loves milk. Try switching to soy milk. Well, hang in there and no matter what you do, think first about what you can do to help her.
