An Internet home based business can have many benefits. Flexible hours, low start-up costs, automated or outsourced order taking, high reward to risk ratio. Internet home based businesses tend to fall into a small number of categories:
* an information based advertising Web site
* an affiliate sales site
* "buy low - sell high" Internet advertising arbitrage
* an Internet retail Web site
* a "buy low - sell high E-Bay business"
* and of course the granddaddy of all Internet home based business - pornography
If that last one appeals to you you're certainly not alone, but you won't find too much help on this article. You will, however, find plenty of help in learning about how to set up any one of the other five categories of Internet home based business. The first one in the list, information based advertising Web site, is a relative newcomer on the scene.
Perhaps, not a newcomer, but at least much more common lately. The reason for that is an advertising program started by Google called AdSense. AdSense is much like the "E-Bay of advertising". In effect, Google is acting as a broker bringing together advertising sellers and advertising buyers through a bidding system. The automation of this bidding system and the technology to match advertising with targeted Web sites makes it possible for even small, low traffic Web sites to cash in on what traffic they do have.
Before AdSense, an Internet home based business would have to get pretty big and successful before it could sell advertising. The brokers in the business at that time were only interested in big Web sites with many thousands of daily visitors. Going to them with your brand new Web site that gets maybe a hundred visitors a day just wouldn't work; they just couldn't be bothered with you. The technology behind AdSense makes it practical for Google to sell advertising for pretty much any and all Web sites, no matter how small.
This has greatly enabled the Internet home based business called "infopreneur". In a strange way, this takes many new commercial Web sites full circle back to something very close to where the Internet and the Web first began. With this type of Internet home based business the Web master is freed from most of the commercial aspects of a typical Internet home based business and is allowed to focus on his primary area of interest - creating an interesting and useful Web site.
An infopreneur builds an Internet home based business almost as if it were a hobby site. If he's smart, he does some keyword research and some search engine optimization to increase his traffic, but beyond that he's mostly concerned with building a content-rich and interesting Web site about something he's really interested in. Once the site gets going, it's a simple matter, to make money from the it with the Google AdSense program.
